The man accused of murdering 21-year-old Stephany Flores and suspected of having a part in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway goes on trial for murder today.
Van der Sloot, 24, is being charged for murdering Flores in his Lima, Peru hotel room last May after they were in the hotel casino. According to authorities, he confessed to killing her, saying he became furious with her when she realized who he was and his connection to Holloway. However, the police and the Flores family believe he committed the crime in an attempt to access the money Flores was winning in the casino.
The whereabouts of Holloway have never been discovered, despite a grave effort from parents, friends and supporters across the nation. She disappeared in Aruba five years ago.
Van der Sloot is facing murder and theft charges that could result in 30 years in prison.
