After 11 years of marriage, actors Richard Gere and Carey Lowell have decided to split, citing differences in lifestyle. Gere and Lowell are reported to have different priorities for their free time, with Gere preferring to relax at home and Lowell gravitating toward social gatherings and friends. The stress of busy schedules and contrasting lifestyles have proven to be too much for the stars, who dated for seven years prior to their marriage and have one child together.
Gere and Lowell’s twelve-year age difference (Gere is 64, Lowell is 52) may not have had a very large impact on the split. According to experts, the perception of relationships with age gaps is far more detrimental than the actual difference in age. The core marital issues that drive couples apart remain to be money, sex, communication, how to spend time and raising children, regardless of age difference between partners.
Lowell has one child from a previous relationship, and has been married twice before. Gere’s previous marriage was to supermodel Cindy Crawford.
