UPDATE: SeaWorld will Not be Meeting PETA in Court Anytime Soon

A federal judge in San Diego discharged a lawsuit by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) when the organization tried to get an order that would force SeaWorld to free five orcas.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller ruled that a lawsuit on behalf of the orcas could not be brought under the anti-slavery 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution because the amendment was created for human beings, not animals. SeaWorld asked the judge to reject the lawsuit, classifying it as nothing more than a publicity stunt.

In a statement praising Miller’s decision, SeaWorld has said they hope this is PETA‘s last publicity attempt and they will now be focusing their energy on their guests and providing the highest standard of care for their animals.
